Pope is warned of a green Antichrist
An arch-conservative cardinal chosen by the Pope to deliver this year’s Lenten meditations to the Vatican hierarchy has caused consternation by giving warning of an Antichrist who is “a pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist”.
Cardinal Giacomo Biffi, 78, who retired as Archbishop of Bologna three years ago, quoted Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900), the Russian philosopher and mystic, as predicting that the Antichrist “will convoke an ecumenical council and seek the consensus of all the Christian confessions.
The “masses” would follow the Antichrist, “with the exception of small groups of Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants” who would fight to prevent the watering down and ultimate destruction of the faith, he said.”
Ok stop it, stop it, STOP IT RIGHT THERE! Now WTF is that? The next Antichrist will be someone who is a “pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist”? The title of the post refers to it as “green” but that’s in the U.K. In the U.S. we know this means a liberal. A LIBERAL! Shit I’m scared.
You honestly want me to believe that the Antichrist will be a liberal? Give me a fucking break! Now I know the guy is old (78) and a religious nut, but several things struck me.
Here is one: the guy was named by the Pope himself. That tells you something right there.
The choice of Cardinal Biffi raised eyebrows in the Vatican, given his sometimes eccentric views. The cardinal gave a warning of the coming of the Antichrist during his two decades as the Archbishop of Bologna, and said that an “invasion” of Muslim immigrants was undermining Europe’s Christian values.
The choice of Lenten speaker has in the past given a clue to Vatican policy, although one source said that Cardinal Biffi had perhaps been chosen because his “verbal fireworks” would keep listeners awake.
I understand his concerns about immigration in general, and of course he’s allowed to have his own opinions, but count the above comment as strike two. “Verbal fireworks”? You’re supposed to love everyone Cardinal. Ever heard of the 10 Commandments?
Here’s strike 3. Bear with me on this guy’s logic…
Cardinal Biffi said that the Antichrist was not necessarily a person but “the reduction of Christianity to an ideology . . . The teaching that the great Russian philosopher left us is that Christianity cannot be reduced to a set of values. At the heart of being a Christian is the personal encounter with Jesus Christ.” But he quoted with approval from Solovyov’s Three Dialogues on War, Progress and the End of History, which suggests that the Antichrist is a real figure.
Cardinal Biffi said that Christianity stood for “absolute values, such as goodness, truth, beauty”. If “relative values” such as “solidarity, love of peace and respect for nature” became absolute, they would encourage “idolatry” and “put obstacles in the way of salvation”.
I don’t give a hoot that he is a Cardinal, here is one conservative idiot for ya’. I understand that values such as “goodness, truth, and beauty” are good wholesome Christian values… but things like “solidarity, love of peace and respect for nature” are not to be considered Christian values? And how the fuck could these values encourage “idolatry” and “put obstacles in the way of salvation”?
Only if you are a conservative idiot, that’s how. 1, 2, 3, you are out.
If I care about the environment – bad, not-Christlike. Love of peace? Peace is for pussies. Respect for nature? Hey, war is good! Jeez. It’s not being a liberal or a conservative that’s wrong, it is taking things to the extreme that is wrong.
However, what struck me the most is this: if the Antichrist will be a “pacifist, ecologist, and ecumenist” and antichrist means “the opposite of Christ“, then what does that make of Christ? Don’t get me wrong, that’s this idiot’s view, and I’m plenty sure the Cheneys, Coulters, and Dobsons of the world feel the same way, but what does this guy think Christ stands for?

Opposite of “pacifist” – how about “warmonger“?
Opposite of “ecologist” – how about “raping the Earth“?
Opposite of “ecumenist” – well we need to define the word first.
In a narrower and more common sense, ecumenism refers to the movement towards co-operation among Christians. For some people, ecumenism is based on the idea that there should be a single Christian Church, but normally it refers to Christians of different Christian denominations working together. Thus ecumenism in reality is usually just the promotion of co-operation and better understanding between religious groups or denominations, without aiming at unity.
The above doesn’t sound that bad on paper. Cooperation among Christians, more understanding… oh right, he’s a conservative idiot. So how about… I’m at a loss for words here. My IQ just dropped a couple of points trying to dissect this idiot. I was thinking of “go fuck yourself“, a la Dick Cheney, but there must surely be something better.

Another example of the conservative need to fragment humanity into competing groups and ideologies. It is only when we recognize our shared humanity that we can eliminate the power that ideologues hold over us.
I think Jesus would have considered those different then himself as the “Good Samaritan”. The message from this man is profoundly un-Christian.

Hmm…having been ordained as a Youth Pastor and been an active non-denominational Christian in both the Catholic Church and the Protestant Church, I can assure you this man needs a psychiatric evaluation.
If we go back to Christian prophecies, which include the prophecies of St. Malachy, we find that the current pope is regarded as the “pacifist” or “peace-maker”:

I don’t think the Antichrist will be a Liberal. For all I know, there are many Antichrists who walk the face of the earth; those that in their priesthood of Christ have molested, raped and emotionally destroyed the lives of many innocent children; those who preaching a diluted Gospel on TV have lived a double-life, engaging in illicit sexual activities, fraud, and many, many ungodly activities.
The Antichrist will be a religious figure. I know it won’t be Pat Robertson, because he’s a psycho, but it may be Benedict for all I know. Or perhaps the pope who follows after him.

Robert, I pretty much agree with your comments… there are figures of the “Antichrist” in our everyday life, such as those that advocate intolerance and violence, or those that don’t care for the poor. Shoot, I could make the case that president Bush is an Antichrist, based on his comments and past performance alone, but of course I would most likely be wrong. Based on what we have seen in the world in the last 20 years, the Antichrist would most likely be a neoconservative or a totalitarian.
It’s kind of funny that the Pope could be the Antichrist… after all, Martin Luther and others thought the same thing.
Who knows, maybe Ricky Martin is the antichrist. Or Ann Coulter. Yeah, I think it’s between Ann Coulter, Hannity or Dobson. 🙂
About him needing a psych evaluation… I keep telling people, as a medical student, that it’s not that you go “crazy” when you get older. If you are an intolerant idiot when you are young, you will probably be an idiot when you reach 80 if you don’t mature and learn from your mistakes. Personally if I was going to rail against a religion that’s really hurting people today, I don’t think I’d choose the Catholics. Sure the inquisitions sucked, but that really was a long time ago…

I do believe that there will be the coming of an “anti-christ” — be he liberal or not is of little consequence. The anti-christ will be against all things good-all things God-all things Jesus. The Book of Revelation is quite clear about the anti-christ.
To put this in perspective – really all the anti-christ is and means is “all things that are against Jesus.” I realize I have over simplified this, but I have done so because the subject in and of itself is quite complex.
So again I ask you — do you really know “enough” to be making a post such as this? — In all do respect.

It is obvious to anyone with a basic understanding of the Bible and Christian thought that this guy does not know enough to say what he does. Furthermore, the reaction presented here is not thought out and reasoned — it is purely emotional, which is a sign of failure to consider the facts surrounding the case. It fails to take into account what the Bible actually says about anti-Christ, much of which encompasses the very attributes railed against in this post.
It is becoming more and more common for people who are either not Christians or at best nominal Christians to respond in this manner when something about the faith does not line up with their worldview. You are right to ask the question you do — does the author of the post really have any grounds for a post such as this?
“Antichrist” = simply someone who is againgst “Christ(ianity)”. But re THE Antichrist, see the Catechism, 675-7, for the Church’s official view (http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism/p1s2c2a7.htm#I):
“Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the ‘mystery of iniquity’ in the form of a religious deception offering [all] men [and women] an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.

This may not exactly clear things up, folks. But bear in mind that a man *in* the Church, from the fellow who wipes down the pews and kneelers, to Cardinal Biffi, and all the way up to His Holiness on the Throne of Peter himself, says something… he isn’t necessarily speaking *for* the Church, the mystical body of Christ. (Exception, of course, is when the Pope speaks ex cathedra, which is very seldom.)
By its simplest definition, “conservative” means “looking out for your own needs first”, whereas “liberal” is “looking to the other person’s needs first”. If the Antichrist is to fool the majority of the world and Christianity, it will not be as an obvious, evil buffoon (e.g., George Bush II, Jong-Il Kim, Ahmedinajad, etc.); we can easily see that *that* particular emperor is pants-less.
No; expect someone kindly, loving, patient, compassionate, big-hearted, generous, honorable, emulable, genuine-seeming, and so on. He will indeed care about the environment, the poor, AIDS, minorities, and so on. The antithesis of Jesus in aim and objective, he will be very Christ-like in appearance in manner. Expect him to be a church-goer, too.
His means to ultimate success will be to seduce morally/spiritually as many people of the world as he can — Christians, yes, but also Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Parsees, Buddhists, Animists, Pagans… you name it. Picture someone seemingly able to bridge the prohibitive chasms separating all these traditions, even reconciling actual warring factions.
Up to this point, all these things are good. He will have great charm and resources, and a genuine talent for marshalling more resources toward those on-the-surface great ideals. (Likely he will *not* exhibit any kind of miraculous powers, since that would identify him as being beyond merely human.) What we won’t be able to detect is that somehow, through this seduction, he will have gained our souls. I don’t know how, or I’d be arming myself (and you guys, too).
Think… at what price can your soul be bought? I don’t mean money, sex, success, power, etc. How about this: would you repudiate your God and faith if someone could cure world hunger? Would you curse Jesus if that were someone’s price for stopping genocide?

Personally, I think boffo Biffi is full *of* Bologna, and should retire from his current position, too. Yet, frustratingly, I find myself ending up on his same square of the board when it comes to picturing what the Antichrist would be like (and I’ve never given it this much though before — thanks, TrulyEqual… I think).
I’m a die-hard liberal, yet very traditional practicing Catholic… and if the Antichrist is going to succeed in the West, he’s going to have to appeal to *me* and my kind; we’ve already seen how easy it is to morally seduce conservatives.
I suspect that this guy’s feelings about “ecologists” is rooted in a fear of Deism.

His statement is itself ecumenist. To be anti-ecumenist would be to completely reject the sanctity of the Orthodox and Protestant denominations, and stress the absolute supremacy of the Pope and Catholic church. But nevermind that.

I was brought up in a Catholic school, kinder to high school, and in catholic catechism we were taught that the first commandment is “you should love god above everything”.
But according to Matthew 2;37-39:
That is taught to little kids around here, at least in Spanish… the 10 Commandments down to their irreducible essence. I thought “thou shall not lie” applied here, but the guy really believes what he is saying, even if he is nuts.
By saying, “yeah, the Antichrist will be a pacifist, an ecologist” you know he is not showing love to certain folks. He means it with a certain elitist disdain. Forget the philosophical argument, we got the message Cardinal.
So guess what? I also read the Bible and therefore am qualified to make such comments. The counter-argument “are you really qualified to make such statements?” is a snide insult, as in “if you were a real, God-fearing Christian you would watch your mouth.” It’s a smear disguised as a critique. I’m already highly educated so it’s not like I can’t parse a couple of thoughtful sentences together. Just because I called the guy what he is – a conservative idiot – doesn’t mean I’m emotional and not rational.
I personally like and believe in liberation theology, but some in the U.S. believe in Christianity a la James Dobson or Jerry Falwell: we’re right, they’re wrong, screw everyone else, they’re going to hell anyway, and we will be saved.
My main point is that religion in general can be used either as a bridge or as a wedge, i.e., we can form bonds even if we disagree on certain things, or create division by saying, “hey, if you don’t believe what I just said, then you’re not a real Christian and I know you don’t want to be left out, right?”
This guy is using it as a wedge. If you want to form a bond with me, that’s not the way to start, with his dumbass comments. I rather teach my children “love everyone like you love thyself and learn to forgive” than “remember the Sabbath”, because with loving God and others, you’re covered. You’re not going to kill or lie or cheat if you respect yourself and others. But people seem to forget that… they pick and choose a part of the Bible that is more sensationalistic, like the book of Revelations and the apocalypse, or the Antichrist, but forget about the simple, beautiful lessons that trascend cultures. I was taught “amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas y al projimo como a ti mismo”, which translates into “love God above all things and others like you love yourself”. Go ahead and tell me that by following that you’re not a good Christian. You will be. You can believe the other stuff if you want to. Basics, basics, basics.

As far as I take things like this, you have here a minor rant from a man to devoted his life to superstition, taboo, and a system of mysticism that’s intolerant of anything that contradicts its own tenets.
As Dawkins and Harris say, faith is a virus. Here we are in the 21st century, and we cannot bring to bear the creativity and rationality of our time. Why? Because so many still are unwilling to look at faith in a literal sense as a problem. Until silly notions like “the antichrist” can be unmade, we have little hope of constructive conversations about any real challenge facing humanity, be it the search for real spirituality, the furthering of real morality (read: mitigation of suffering), and the improvement of the human condition.

Personally, the way I read it is that the loon is actually suggesting that the anti-christ is not literally a person or someone who will bring about the end of the world. I’m reading it as the anti-christ may bring the end of the world of the Christian church. Lets be honest, environmentalism, pacifism & bringing together people will render the church redundant.

I see here a misconception of whom is to blame to be Antichrist. Antichrist is a system and a system is the church of kali. Mithras is the religion that Rome had as Caesar caught his second wife to be the priestess of Bona Dea. This woman was in reality Caesar’s sister- a Julia was she. His father, of the same name, came from a respectable but undistinguished family of the equestrian order and was governor of Macedonia) adopted a young man (after all had he no male successors)- this man was Lucius Vitellius Secundo. Lucius Vitellius Secundo went as he was thirteen years of age to Judea, where his stepfather Caiaphas reigned. That Caiaphas had married Maria Magdalena Arithimae- this woman was Jesus mother. Caiaphas had once a dual citizenship- after all was he a Roman called Joseph Arithimae. He was once Germanicus the Elder, who had to hide as his brother had tried to kill him. Seneca the Elder had his friend Germanicus convinced that he should vanish from Germany. The Roman troops in Judea of that time and later was Germanicus legion- all comes together. Seneca the Elder was as you maybe have guessed John the Baptist.
By the way if you have missed the true message: after Jesus was killed on the cross did his stepbrother Artebanus take on his shoulders to be Lucius Vitellius, whose son was Aulus Vitellius. That Aulus was then the first pope of the newly founded catholic church- pope Peter the I was as a fact a Caesar and Pontifex Maximus. He was martyred but this is a completely other story.

Wow,maybe you’re IQ was not too high in the first place. When going on a rampage be sure to check your facts first. The ten commandments say nothing about loving anybody outside your own family, well they do tell you not to love your neighbors wife too much. I think you may be referring to what is commonly known as ” the golden rule” do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Or perhaps Christ’s response to the Pharisees question about the greatest commandment,Love the Lord your God with all your heart mind and strength, and the second is like it love the neighbor as yourself. Also I am a bit confused, you seem to be commenting on Christianity from an inside viewpoint, are you a christian?

That is religion, what religion is understood to be now is merely a misconception of how to drink coffee at starbucks.

As for Christ’s response to the Pharisees, yes, you’re absolutely correct. In fact I quoted exactly from Matthew 2; 37-39 and gave a link to it in one of my responses. I don’t know if my IQ is high enough, but apparently some “believers” relish in the fact that the 10 Commandments don’t contain anything about “love” in them, like loving someone outside your family, as if that were a good thing. It’s not… isn’t this wrong? Kind of a shame, ain’t it? When we asked this in school, the very thoughtful replies we got from priests and nuns is that all commandments, all of them, can be traced and have love of God and others at their basis.
“Do not kill”? – love of life, respect of life, love of others and of yourself (yes, drinking yourself silly breaks this commandment, because you are not treating your body with the respect it deserves).
Likewise with the rests of the commandments… again, having people focus on the Antichrist instead of respecting others is honestly a waste of time. Loving others and forgiving is Christianity at its irreducible essence. Again people forget that… they’re experts in finding and remembering passages in the Old Testament but hardly know, and practice, Jesus’s teachings. “Christianity” has the word “Christ” in it, ya know? One gets kind of tired fighting religious nuts who see what is not there – the AntiChrist as a liberal – but ignore what is plainly obvious: that Jesus is love, and using his name to boost every stupid thought charlatans come up with is wrong.

How funny so many people today seem to want to show how much they can hate others who don’t think their way. We laughingly call conservatives, religous nuts and idiots. What we have today isn’t religon, but mankinds religon. We quote passages from the Bible, but have never looked them up to see if they in fact exist. We heard it some where and take it as fact. It’s like taking the daily show as real news or think just because dan rather was on TV for so long that what he says is fact. He was, like so many others, nothing more then a script reader.
It’s sad to think that in a very short time this country will no longer exist. Yes, I hear the cheers of the hate America people. Let me try again. you have some very valid points, however I think that your scriptural reference to the 10 Commandments was off target and the answer of Jesus to the Pharisees may have proven your point more effectively. Also, in most circles the constant use of obscenity, while charming I am sure is usually seen as a lack of adequate vocabulary, or indifference to moral values, ergo my question, are you a christian? The book of Daniel and apostle Paul taught Anti-christ would destroy through peace. I have been listen to Israelis whose comments on the results of Oslo remind me of this very thing. Not only that, but the first epistle of John, teaches the spirit of the anti-christ already exists in the world. I hereby declare myself a candidate for Antichrist, as the beloved Cardinal has clearly unmasked me.
The anti – Christ, or more accurately the beast, will NOT be a pacifist. Instead, he will come proclaiming peace, but will wage war. He will claim that warfare will be necessary to “defeat the enemies of peace”; that in order for there to be peace all enemies of peace – which will conveniently be all HIS enemies – must be destroyed. The beast will basically be a fascist, but one that is all things to all people, and not one that has definably by any ideology. The “Left Behind” types who all claim that the beast will will be an EU or UN type in order to provoke their current political enemies are doing the world a huge disservice … performing the beast’s agenda I dare say. At the risk of getting caught up in all this mindless chatter, here is a fitting blog entry for those with such classless mouths to consider. If you aren’t going to put unbiased and deferential thought into things, you are being hypocritical and eating your own judgment. You want truth and you want justice, but you want it without a cost. The Cardinal, like each of us, deserves the same respect you are asking the world to give you. If you are going to classify this blog as a place of equality then live up to the standard.
I’m giving the Cardinal the benefit of the doubt and assuming his wording used by the Cardinal is very sloppy. Words have meaning that are often twisted or otherwise:

The antichrist could certianly be that. The description of the Image of the Beast in Rev 13 could be a description of syndicalism.
Is the antichrist a pacifist.Not in the true sense of the word, but he may very well use a false peace to disarm his enemies.During Both the Vietnam War and the War in Iraq many selective used pacifist arguments to condemn America while ignoring atrocities on the other side. The antichrist will do the same. Daniel 8:23-25 describes a man like the antichrist using peace to destroy many.
Is the antichrist an ecumenical. Yes, in the sense that he will seek to unites all of the world’s religions. This ecumenicalism, however, is not absolutely universal. Only those who are willing to be manipulated by the antichrist in his quest to control people will be allowed religious freedom. All other will be persecuted. The antichrist’s ecumenicalism will be like the Nazis. I suspect that the Cardinal was deliberately vague on ecumenicalism because he Catholic Church is playing the same game. Jesus, the transliterated name given to Yeshua HaMashiach, was a pacifist? Well, not in the sense that the word is used. It was desired of the Messiah that He lead a revolt against the Roman empire that was brutally subjugated the Jews, but He declined it, not because of pacifist political leanings, but rather because His duties on earth were spiritual, not political. But did Yeshua HaMashiach oppose warfare and violence of all kinds and for all reasons? I have not seen anything in the scriptures that would indicate that, and quite frankly have seen more evidence to the contrary. Realize that people misunderstand the title “Prince of Peace” given to Yeshua HaMashiach, perceiving it to mean that He came to bring peace between men or nations. But that would contradict His own teachings where He said in the scriptures, which was that not only would warfare and violence still exist until His return, but that they would greatly increase over time (who can deny that His prophecy in that regards came true)? Instead, that title refers to His bringing peace between man and GOD; His removing the curse that God placed on mankind because of Adam’s sin.
And as far as “Like I said, love and respect others and you’ll be fine”, well the primary concern should be loving GOD. THEN one can set himself about loving others. How does one love God? Well, as Yeshua HaMashiach said, if you love God, then you will keep His Commandments! The only way to love God is through obedience to Him. If you obey God – who incidentally also tells you to love people so that covers that base as well – THEN you will be fine. Otherwise … well we will not go there at this time.
Healtheland, no offense, I rather have love and respect others first. You know why? Because there are plenty of pricks in this world who “believe” in God but treat their fellow men like shit. Think Dobson, Falwell, or the whole bunch that is in the White House right now for that matter.
They believe that by reading the Bible alone, and going to Church alone, and saying “I’m a Christian” alone, “loving” God is enough. Plenty of idiots love their God, but behave like, well, idiots. Yes, we can argue that they don’t really love God they way they should, but that’s akin to telling a Christian “you’re not a Christian”, which I believe is slightly worse than calling their mother a whore (that’s a joke!). I have seen much pain, misery and suffering in the world, in other parts of the world as well, and much of that stems from not communicating effectively and not loving and respecting others. But guess what? They all loved God – in their own little way.
Again, I rather teach my children to love, respect and forgive others first. They could worship Buddha for all I care for, but if my children grow up to be loving, humane, wonderful human beings, treat their spouses and children like royalty, respect others and remember and take care of their parents when they get older (because I’m really getting fucking older) then guess what? They turned out fine, and have earned their place in heaven.
I curse a lot – and a warning is prominently displayed in the banner of this webpage – but read thorough some of the stories on this website and tell me that the primary concern should be loving God. All of these people love God, in their own way, but have so little love and concern for each other that the spiritual level they claim to be at has correlation to the shit they do in real life.

Well, I think that you sort of omitted a key part of my statement. The only way to love God is to keep His Commandments, and one of His Commandments is to love your fellow man. Yeshua HaMashiach Himself said that the person who claims to love God and hate his fellow man does not love God at all but rather is a liar. There is a big difference between believing in God and loving God.
As far as your kids earning their way into Heaven; how does one do that precisely? By being a good person? Well, I dare say that one does not have to believe in the God of the Bible to be a good, moral person. One does not even believe in God at all. And you know what? A person does not have to love other people to be a good person. One is perfectly capable of treating other people with respect without loving them. It is far more possible to hate people that you never have to deal with while loving people that you do. For instance, if you plain don’t like black people, move to Idaho. (And if you plain don’t like white people, move to Washington D.C. or Gary, Indiana.) If you never see a black (or white) person, then you will, I guess, never have the opportunity to act hatefully or immorally towards them. But though your actions might be pure, the hate is still in your heart! So, can someone with hate in their heart earn their way into Heaven?
