Saddam Hussein Hanging Video – war porn for you (NOT!)

Yeah right, like if I’m going to link to the real video. You can get your “war porn” elsewhere – it was bad when he killed people, and it is bad to derive some sense of happiness from watching him hang. So have some fun instead… it’s Christmas.

I’m glad he’s gone, but actually I would have him alive – yes alive. You know why? Because George Bush the elder, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dick Cheney (through Halliburton) were waist-deep in shady businesses with him. What do prosecutors do when they get a big fish? Have them squeal the other big fishes. I’m sure Saddam was willing to offer plenty of incriminating documents in order to save his neck…

Update: There is another Saddam Hussein video… just what we need.

And I’m so glad someone actually noticed! This post was the top “Saddam Hussein” post on WordPress.com for a short while precisely because a majority of users, for some sick reason want to see actual footage of someone getting hanged.

Of course, I know curiosity is a killer, but what gets me out of all this Saddam debacle is that no one dares to say that this hanging stinks to the high heavens. Saddam deserve what he got, true, but through a mock trial guided with the hand that fed him – the U.S. This is by no means justice – he got what he deserved, but what the wingnuts don’t seem to get is that all the other criminal cases against him and his associates fall flat. He can’t say in court, “do you know about the time that I violated international law by accepting weapons from the U.S.? You don’t? Why don’t you ask Donald Rumsfeld?”

Also, the hanging video available on the net is a disgrace. You can hear the guards insulting him, and various people had video-recording cell phones – isn’t that illegal? Imagine if someone in the U.S. recorded a snuff video of one of the executions with his cell phone.

Just because he was a war criminal it doesn’t mean that we are going to reduce ourselves to his level. He was an animal, but we behaved like animals during and after the trial too. I wanted to see Augusto Pinochet sentenced and sent to jail (or to his execution), along with full compensation to all of the victims’ families, but the bastard died before we could get to him (in part because the so-called justice system made sure to delay the trials). And now that we had another bonafide war criminal, what do we do? We blew the chance to serve full justice to all the parties involved.

What do you call this? Easy: Mission Accomplished!

I’d always considered the whole thing a bit rushed and a little suspect as a result. It’s as if certain people were trying to get rid of him as soon as possible before he could talk or damage anyone’s reputations. That he wasn’t allowed visitors and couldn’t really speak to anybody outside the prison (except for a select few) further suggests that the authorities wanted to keep him quiet. You’d think a news interview with Saddam would be a huge coup for a network, the prospect of someone like Barbara Walters interviewing Saddam would be too good an opportunity to pass up – the vast majority of Americans would be really interested in seeing it… yet no interviews were allowed.

I think he would be more effective rotting in a cell his whole life. Not only would he fade out of history and out of the memories of the people (whereas killing him runs the risk of making him a martyr to a few radicals) but he could have some very useful information he’d be willing to part with in exchange for a luxury (a somewhat more comfortable bed?) or two… Of course then he could have implicated others and they wouldn’t want that. =P

At the very least we could have learned from him how to control the Iraqis…

  4. man, i don’t feel good about the execution at all. yes, he was a complete bastard, but did you read his final letter? with all the invented and suspect shit surrounding the war, i just don’t trust this either.

  5. plubius says:

The execution is a tragedy. This is the price we have to pay for choosing petty dictators over the results of young democracies. The only crime in which provoked the invasion on Iraq was not any war crime or WMDs, it was because of Saddam’s disobedience to the US.

  6. shosho1 says:

Well.. Like I said.. it was a pleasure to see the freek hang. As far as his letter goes..he said all that only to make himself look good to his own people, to make him look like he was innocent .. Did you see on tv about the connection with Saddam, His Uncle and Hitler??? Now that was an eye opener!
Saddam did do war crimes! He gassed his own people for crimeny sakes!! WE FOUND tanks of mustard gas and other WMD!! What do you think he had all this for?? Just to look at??? HE KILLED HIS OWN PEOPLE with it!! CHILDREN..Innocent helpless people The only tragesy is that Saddam was not tortured, ripped limb from limb and disemboweled by his own people that he so deserves.

  7. shosho, it can be agreed upon that Saddam was a war criminal–i am intimately familar with his crimes and the mass killings of his people. but, we did not find any WMD’s or tanks of mustard or cerin gas. not in any mass quantity or any that wasn’t made in the USA.

my problem with the execution of Saddam is i can’t think of one positive aspect of the entire event — i can’t name one good thing about it. of course, it sounds like you think vindication is synonymous with justice, and it’s just not.

don’t get me wrong, because i’m a Soldier, and when i was in Iraq i would have shot that motherfucker in the face, because that was my job. the same goes for osama bin laden right now.

what you need to realize is that being humane and being civilized means that it doesn’t matter if you’ve caught the devil himself, punishment and debt to soceity must always be administered judisiously; the short answer to what all that means is just because you’ve caught a murderer and torturerer, it doesn’t mean that you have the right to be a murderer and torturerer back to him.

what good is a society that says you can’t murder and torture, but we sure can.

  8. shosho says:

Brandon.. Saddam did not show mercy to the people he has murdered. In my book, we did show him mercy as he WAS hung and not turned loose to his own people to do the honors.
I agree, we can not and should not be like him…But it is so hard to think of a man like this to not suffer some of his own medicine. You being a soldier I respect you and value your views on this. But I have to be honest to say Im glad hes gone no matter how he was eliminated.
Thank you for your service in Iraq and Thank God you are safe and I continue to pray for the safety of all our soldiers in that hellhole.

  9. […] I’m really tired of this Saddam video bullshit. Instead of letting him rot in a jail cell and fall into oblivion, he will now achieve martyrdom status. We have a bonafide war criminal and what do we do? We hang him like if it were a bad Wild West cowboy movie. Just because the prick deserved to die does not mean we have to reduce ourselves to the proverbial medieval mob. […]

  11. plubius says:

I’m sure all the nuclear bombs we found underneath Saddam’s palace really did give the Iraqi invasion the legitimacy it needed… Oh wait, we didn’t! So, now, we’re legitimizing it with our “overthrow the evil dictator (used to be communist)” act!
